On Sunday, the return of snow, ice and reduced visibility caused Trail Ridge to be temporarily closed. Like Trail Ridge Road, the popular scenic drive and cycling route closes each winter and traditionally reopens Memorial Day weekend.The road is scheduled to reopen the first weekend in June and timed-entry tickets for Mount Evans Road will again be required this year for cars, motorcycles and scooters. The Sheep Lakes Information Station is open and staffed during the summer season from 9:30 a.m. Sheep Lakes Parking Lot is open year-round 24 hours daily. The same late-season snowfall and high winds that had workers hustling to clear Trail Ridge Road has delayed the opening of Mount Evans Road. Sheep Lakes, located in Horseshoe Park, is a great place to view wildlife. As always, the Colorado Department of Transportation urges motorists to check the weather and road conditions before driving the pass. Workers were also able to clear snow and reopen Independence Pass on Thursday. Drivers will need to reserve an entry time in advance, and all visitors also need to purchase a park pass to access the road. A late May snowstorm created five-foot deep snow drifts over some portions of the road, leaving park officials uncertain if workers would be able to clear the road in time for Memorial Day weekend. If snow plowing operations and weather allow, Trail Ridge Road may be open an additional 4 miles to Rainbow Curve. During the time of your visit, Trail Ridge Road will be open about 8 miles from the east side entrances to Many Parks Curve (9,640 ft.) weather permitting. This year, it opened on June 4.Rocky Mountain National Park announced Friday that Trail Ridge Road is open for the season. Trail Ridge Road is not scheduled to open for the season until May 28, 2021. Trail Ridge Road is a seasonal road that is open mid-May through early October, of course, all depending on the weather. Do note that Old Fall River Road is one-way only, so plan to drive it east to west, and return via Trail Ridge Road west to east. However, this former route is still open today, offering a scenic drive from Estes Park toward Grand Lake, meeting back up with Trail Ridge Road at the Alpine Visitor Center. Old Fall River Road has also closed for the season. The road was not designed to be an all season road, with 11 miles above 11,500 feet, few guardrails and no shoulders and winter conditions occurring often above 10,000 feet. Trail Ridge Road remains open to Many Parks Curve on the east side of the park and to the Grand Lake Entrance on the west side of the park, due to safety issues related to the East Troublesome Fire impacts along that lower western portion of Trail Ridge Road. The road is closed between the Colorado River Trailhead and Grand Lake Entrance to all uses.
